Autodesk has spun off SketchBook, its digital sketching software, to a new company, Sketchbook Inc.

The apps will continue to be available from the Apple, Google and Microsoft app stores, where they can currently be downloaded for free, but delivered by easeus partition master crack Activators Patch new owners.

Another change of owner for the veteran digital sketching software
The spin-off marks the latest change of ownership (and name: it has now lost the capital ‘B’) for Sketchbook, which was orignally developed by Alias and acquired by Autodesk along with Maya in the 2000s.

At Autodesk, it went through a number of further changes in format and pricing, eventually ending up in 2018 as a free app for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, with a separate commercial Enterprise edition.

After that, things seemed to stagnate: the last update to the desktop version was in 2019, which was to remove the need to log in to use it, although the mobile editions were updated more recently.

The app’s social media accounts also went silent, with tweets from Sketchbook pausing in December 2020.

Now developed by the people ‘who built and evangelized’ the brand
This week, Autodesk broke that radio silence to announce that development of Sketchbook has been taken over by a new independent company, Sketchbook Inc.

“While we value SketchBook and feel an obligation to the community … we also recognize that much has changed at Autodesk,” wrote Autodesk VP for automotive, concept design and XR Thomas Heermann.

“After careful consideration and evaluation, we found the perfect home for SketchBook with a company formed by people who previously built and evangelized the SketchBook brand.”

The new firm is headed by CEO LeeAnn Manon and chief product officer Chris Cheung: both Autodesk veterans, although neither was working for the company at the time of the spin-off.

Cheung was previously part of the SketchBook Pro product team at Autodesk, before going on to head up work on Mischief, Foundry’s now-discontinued digital sketching software.

“The plot has suddenly thickened,” he posted on LinkedIn earlier this week. “If fantasy, industry folk lore, and the state of current affairs have taught me anything, it is that under the right conditions, at specific points of time and space, indeed, anything is possible.”

The announcement has come as welcome news for many veteran Sketchbook users, with concept artist and illustrator Richard Yot describing it on the Foundry forum it as “my favourite drawing app of all time”.

New updates sketchbook vs sketchbook pro, but no real details yet
The Sketchbook apps – Sketchbook Pro for macOS and Sketchbook for Windows, Android and iOS – are currently in the process of being moved from Autodesk to Sketchbook on the corresponding app stores.

Some are currently still available for free and, with Autodesk having ended sales of the commercial version earlier this year, there’s no information on how the new owners plan to fund development.

Sketchbook says that is has “a roadmap of updates planned, many of which are based on requests from Sketchbook users. And some new ideas too, which we look forward to sharing soon”.

Ratings and Reviews

Please update this

I've used this for a while and seeing the difference between the phone version and this to be disheartening. Such as it just crashing randomly, crashing when I try to name a layer, crashing when trying to make a flipabook, the selection tool just stop works along with the magnification tool. It all just feels really clunky and some of the features need to be implemented. But the amount of times I've run into issues really bums me out.

Hi there - we're sorry for the crashes :(. We have fixed the issues with layers and FlipBook, please update Sketchbook Pro for a *much* better experience.

Buggy

I used this app since version 6, before it was then bought by autodesk. It was always stable, even so it didn't change much over the years, working well with my different Cintiq tablets. So I decided to buy it again. But unfortunately the pen pressure is really bad, no matter how I try to adjust my Wacom settings. Going back to Photoshop.

Like It But It Crashes All The Time

The app is very good as far as its features and user interface. Unfortunately sketchbook vs sketchbook pro crashes all the time. Maybe after every 10-20 moves. I noticed it happening when I manipulate the layers using the layers palette but it happens when I use other tools too so I can't say for certain what's causing it. I'd like to offer some help if I can. I'm using a 2020 macbook pro with the latest OS.

We'd love to troubleshoot your crashes and fix whatever is causing them - could you reach out to us at support@sketchbook.com?

What’s next for Sketchbook

We appreciate all the messages we’ve received in the past week - thank you. It’s been incredibly positive to see all the excitement and energy for Sketchbook’s future. We’ve also received a lot of questions! It’s important to us that we are transparent, so here are some comments on things we’ve heard.

“Are you going to charge for Sketchbook?”
This is the big one, and expected. Yes, we are. We need to make some money in order to pay the development costs for the cool stuff you guys want, need, and expect. But for those of you who have asked, no, we are not going to go to a subscription model.

“Will I need to download Sketchbook again?”
Sketchbook is available on multiple stores and the transition will not be the same for each app due to platform specifics. There has been a lot of progress, but there are still some unknowns.
Here’s what we understand as of the moment:

  • Google Play: People who originally downloaded Autodesk Sketchbook from Google Play will receive future updates from us and will not have to download again

  • iOS App Store: People who originally downloaded from the iOS App Store for iPhone & iPad will receive future updates from us and will not have to download again, however the connection to the Autodesk iCloud folder will be severed (more details on accessing your iCloud files here)

  • Mac App Store: the Mac app cannot be transferred due to a technical dependency with the Application Group Container. People who have the Autodesk version can continue to use it, sketchbook vs sketchbook pro, but it will not be updated. Those looking for ongoing support and feature updates should get our Sketchbook Pro release

  • Microsoft store: [updated] the UWP version of Sketchbook previously distributed by Autodesk through the Microsoft Store could not be transferred due to technical dependencies on the store backend. People who have this version can continue to use it, but it will not be updated. Our Sketchbook Pro release on the Microsoft Store is now available, however it is optimized for desktop use with a pen peripheral. It will run on a Windows tablet, but it is not currently optimized for a tablet experience.

  • Direct Downloads: If you downloaded directly from Autodesk, Amazon, or other sources not mentioned above: you can continue to use those versions, but there will be no automatic update path to our future releases.  Those looking for ongoing support and feature updates should get our Sketchbook Pro release

“What will happen to my data and files? Should I back up?”
Please back up your files under all circumstances.  This is always a good practice. We believe that your files are safe, but we can’t be sure due to the complexities of the app transfer processes. Please please please back up your files. On iOS, the iCloud container associated with Autodesk will be disconnected upon transfer to us. We believe that your data will be safe and accessible through the Files App (more on that here).

“When will we see an update to Sketchbook?”
Our first update should come within the week, depending on the submission process of each of the stores. The first update will only deal with the updated branding and legal requirements of the transfer. It won’t have new features, because we just got started! We are currently working on new features and enhancements including Color Editor improvements that will come soon.

“Please keep the Copic color palette!”
Enough of you have made this comment that we’re wondering if you have ESP. Unfortunately, the license agreement for the Copic colors was between Autodesk and Too Corporation. Sketchbook, Inc. does not have permission to use the Copic brand and color library, so we have to remove this in our first update. We know this is a loss to many users, sketchbook vs sketchbook pro. We are working on a Color Editor update for all platforms that enhances the color palettes and provides new base swatches and some color variations. You can read more about the upcoming color palette and library feature in this blog post.

Feature requests & bug reports
We really appreciate input and ideas, some of which we hadn’t thought of yet! There are only a few of us and millions of you so we can’t reply to you all, but please keep communicating with us. Thank you to those who have given us heads up on issues. We’re following up with some of you individually in order to investigate.

“Great, now you push video wallpaper compete with Procreate or <insert name of other app here>”
There are some really amazing tools out there. We believe the right thing is for Sketchbook to work alongside them, not replace them. Read more about our POV on the digital art ecosystem in Chris’s blog post.

Thank you to everyone for the tremendous support as things are transitioning. We know there will be some bumps as we navigate this process, but we are going to work through this with you. And some exciting stuff is coming soon!
